Barcelona Chapter 01

Views from Montjuïc

The rooftops, the busy port, the avenues, and the Mediterranean stretching beyond. Barcelona looks particularly gorgeous from up here. There’s so much to take in, and every time I look in a different direction, something else catches my attention.

Barcelona’s waterfront and the sea, seen from Montjuïc through branches
The port cable car crossing above the marina of Port Vell
Ferries in the harbour of Port Vell, with the city and the sea beyond
Sailing boats on the sea beyond Barcelona’s port
The Columbus Monument and the streets around it, seen from above
Barcelona’s rooftops stretching to the hills, with Torre Glòries on the skyline
The port and the open sea, with ferries below and sailing boats on the horizon
The Columbus Monument and the city beyond, framed by a string of lights
The W Hotel and the port seen between palm trees
The cable car between its towers, with a gull and the sea beyond
A cruise ship leaving the port, beside a harbour crane
The Columbus Monument seen between palm trees, with the hills beyond
A stone statue in a garden, framed by hedges and branches
The W Hotel seen through a window, past a vase of flowers
Woven chairs and tables on a wooden terrace, surrounded by greenery
Cruise ships moored in the port beside a cable car tower, seen at a tilt
The marina and waterfront of Port Vell, seen at a tilt
A cable car tower above the port, with the sea behind
The city’s towers above the marina in warm light, with the hills beyond
The waterfront towers and the marina seen through trees, with the sea beyond
The Sagrada Família rising above the rooftops in warm light

Barcelona Chapter 02

A Walk Through Port Vell

I’ve always had a soft spot for harbours. Perhaps it’s the boats that seem ready to leave at any moment, or the thought of all the places they’ve been. There’s something about old harbours that makes me think of another time, and the people that have been arriving and leaving from these shores for centuries. Port Vell still carries a little of that feeling, that wonderful mix of arrivals, departures and life happening somewhere in between.

A red cable car crossing above Port Vell and the Maremagnum, with the city and the sea beyond
Tall palm trees above empty benches on the waterfront promenade, with a tower beyond
Cyclists passing beneath palm trees beside the marina’s sailing boats
A woman walking towards the moored sailing boats, with people sitting by the water and the footbridge’s arches beyond
A Catalan flag flying among the masts of sailing boats, with a Ferris wheel behind
Rigging, a furled sail and life rings on the deck of a wooden sailing ship, seen at a tilt
The mast and coiled ropes of a wooden sailing ship, with the Maremagnum beyond
The bow and rigging of a wooden sailing ship, with the cable car and a gull in the sky above
The cable car tower at the port, with two red cabins on the wires
People and gulls on the Rambla de Mar footbridge beneath its arch, with the Maremagnum and palm trees behind
The schooner Santa Eulàlia moored in the port, with the cable car crossing above
A palm tree in front of a ferry and a cruise ship moored in the port, seen at a tilt
People crossing the Rambla de Mar footbridge between its curved arches, above the water
Tall palm trees along the waterfront, with a tower rising between them
A couple walking along the waterfront among gulls, with the W Hotel beyond
A couple on a bench by the water, looking out at the Rambla de Mar footbridge
Sailing boats moored in the marina in warm evening light, with towers beyond and reflections on the water
